My family agreed to keep our parents at home as long as possible, according to their wishes. My dad died at home in his sleep at 90. My mom is 93 and still in the house we built in 1968.

She is more comfortable there, especially since her sight and hearing are nearly gone. She knows how to move around without fear. Her world is familiar and comforting.

My siblings and I are fortunate that she can manage at home alone, as there is no money available to move her into any kind of assisted living. That was my parents retirement plan - no savings- just work as long as possible and die at home.

My 3 siblings are there every day. I fly home frequently to stay for a week or two and give everyone a break from the routine.
