When my oldest sister died in 2006 at the age of 56 she made me promise I would set up a trust. I kept the promise, and even included who would be in charge of our children and their inheritance.

We've updated our trust twice since our kids are young (ish) adults now, but it has always been a comfort knowing things are spelled out and in order.

I created a binder with all of our assets, insurance, and debt information with logins and passwords so they could access money right away and pay bills if something happened to me and my husband simultaneously.

Fortunately, our situation is more straightforward - two daughters from one marriage, and thankfully they get along well. They might have to fight over keeping or selling the house one day, but that's their problem!
