Your experience is not uncommon at all, and it is not "woo woo" by any means. I talk to people weekly who connect with Spirit, and I talk to Spirit as well. I find humor is often prevalent in communication from our loved ones. My daughter has a spirit in her room who makes things disappear all the time. Only when she says aloud "I give up!" will the object reappear in some place we looked at least three times!
